Osteoarthritis is more common among women than men

Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over time due to the lack of synovial fluid which protects our bones from this and it is considered the most common form of arthritis and it is currently affecting millions of people around the world.

In a recent study from Dr. Monte Hunter and colleagues published in the journal Scientific Reports, suggest that women are more prone to develop osteoarthritis due to the presence of a small molecule called microRNA in the synovial fluid, which according to the study, is majorly carried by women than men.

The analysis revealed significant differences in microRNA activity between men and women with OA. Researchers found that women were more likely than men to show a deactivation or alteration of microRNAs due to the estrogen levels which are dramatically reduced as a result of menopause, leading to a greater production of bone-destroying cells.
